After Ghaddafi’s call for dividing Nigeria into Christian and Muslim republics, Abuja recalls ambassador; Nigerians debate issue

Special to USAfricaonline.com

Nigeria on Thursday recalled its ambassador from Libya over a diplomatic row caused by controversial Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi’s comments made earlier in the week that Nigeria should be divided into a Christian and a Muslim state for ending the country’s frequent inter-religious violence.

In a strongly worded statement, Nigerian Foreign Ministry said it was recalling its ambassador because the “irresponsible utterances of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, his theatrics and grandstanding at every auspicious occasion have become too numerous to recount.”

The Foreign Ministry said in the statement that Abuja welcomes “well-meaning comments from concerned members of the international community,” adding that the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria are sacrosanct and non-negotiable.”

The statement read out by Foreign ministry spokesman Ozo Nwobu described the Libyan leader’s comments as “unacceptable and unbecoming of any leader who claims to advocate and champion the cause of African integration and unity.”

Earlier, Ghaddafi addressing African students in Tripoli on Wednesday said a radical solution was required to halt the frequent sectarian violence in Nigeria as it was a “deep-rooted conflict of a religious nature.” Nigeria’s Senate president retired General David Mark dismissed Ghaddafi as “a mad man.”

USAfrica affirms that some Nigerians have equally pondered the Ghaddafi “solution” to the recurring religious violence in their country. Our readers reaction/views are welcome here at USAfricaonline.com

    Hey Guyz
Ghadaffi is right. The problem of Nigeria is religious and not ethnic at all. We have several ethnic groups but none has committed such henious act against another. The fact here is that, some notorious hoodlums who parade themselves as muslims in the north are killing freely because they have lots of loyalist in power. Lets divide the country and end religious wars and parasitics and oppressive attitudes of the northerners. Nigeria must divide for good.

  2. Hey boy it is not your problem, first solve you problem and leave other to manage there life, if actually you are ok with being a Nigeria and you enjoys the benefit of you northernism. I will tell you something, u is a beach. I must say u is mad, if your child goes out with your neighbor that humiliates him or her, what do you do to stop it? Well for me the best thing is to cut off the relationship. Am not writing from Nigeria, am writing from an Islamic country so I you want try to have a travel. You guts don't understand all the raps you guys are doing, all you guys do affect we over here, I have many country I want to travel even the free VISA countries we are denied those access because of you Muslims, (Bombing and so Killing) actually I must say it again you are a beach, one for insulting your prophet, two lack of continence, three greed and wickedness for not letting the sucking baby breath and leave. But remember that one day the sleeping exiled lion will wake up and you guys will never find it well nest time.

I must warn any day you guys try to affect any of my relation, I will fly down and for each of my relation I will go down with 100,000 Muslims I promise you that and I will as well track you down through you IP, If you want to try my pray it happen. (Mr. Info. Tech. Robert)

for some people Gaddafi's comment is exactly what they want to hear, hence, call it the truth. if Nigeria has to be divided to solve it's conflicts , one thing is for certain, it is going to be divided into 300 hundred countries. the bitter truth is Nigerian conflicts are more ethnic than religious in nature. so talking of hearing the bitter truth that's it. divide Nigeria into 300 countries and not a dust will ever rise again to disturb its peace. i am a 'mad man' are'nt i? TOLERANCE IS THE ONLY WAY!!!!

  4. chinwe says:

we should not blame gaddafi afterall , he did not in any way contribute to nigerian"s problems , he is only proferring solutions to our problems ,calling him a madman is not fair , don"t you know that madmen tell the truth in parables, the fate of our country lies with us. whether to be or not to be.

Nigeria at 50 is old enough to handle it problems mostly internal but when we leave the real issues and start chasing shadows then someone has to tell us where we are going wrong .we should mend our leaking roofs before the rainy seasons .as for nigeria disintegrating , i do not see this country disintegrating even in the next 200 years to come ,what we need is patience , tolerance and also possilbe national conference to discuss issues and work out solutions.

long live the federal republic of nigeria

long live the good people of nigeria

Gaddafi truly nids his head examined…he dsnt evn have a right 2 tlk abt Nigeria..he shld go back 2 his advisers(dt is if he has any) n myb dy wld lt him understnd dt north doesn't mean Islam n south Christian n dividing d country is not a solution..he is jst an over ambitious, power thristy leader who knws dt his chance of being d leader of United States of Africa is 0 as long as a United Nigeria stands in his way.King of Kings my foot

  6. jaffey williams says:

You can dismiss Gadaffy all you want, call him "mad man" all you can but he told you the bitter truth. After every riot, Gowon will task the victims to embrace peace. After fifty years covering their eyes to the truth, you cannot fault Gaffafy for offering a bad solution when Nigeria has tried and convicted anybody from 1966 to present day. David mark can hide his head in the sand while his people are slaughtered because saying anything will threaten his seat. What a shame!

Gowon is used to going to two parties, one party armed and the other not, and telling them after a massacre to embrace peace. Killing a christian is not a crime in Nigeria and you are mad at Gadaffy. What an egg head.

  7. Enuji favour says:

Ghadaffi is indeed a mad man. How can a self acclaimed champion of the cause of african solidarity & unity now advocate the balkanization of Nigeria along religious lines? In fact Col madman Ghadaffi ought to be reclining on the psychiatric's couch. A united nation makes Nigeria tick in the int'l community and poses the greatest threat to tripoli's continental ambitions.

  8. Babatunde says:

For sen.david mark to call Gaddafy a mad man apptly illustrate the proverbial kettle that calls the pot black. I wont say who is insane (more) but the fact still remains that if our leaders have been seriously going about there duity dilligently, humbley & truthfully,no man will have any cause to see Nigeria's need to break away.

Was it not Mark that said a couple of years back that telephone is not for the massess? What a 'craze world'
